Roadtripper Application 2025 – National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Trip

CDM and EQUS have joined forces once again, for the 2025 National Quantum & Dark Matter Road Trip! This year’s trip will travel from Broome to Perth and Adelaide, through central NSW, to Syndey with additional events in various capital cities.

We’ll be stopping at schools, libraries, pubs and other community hubs, with a particular focus on bringing quantum and dark matter to regional and remote communities. The offical driving route is yet to be determined, but the two main legs are:

Leg 1: 4–10 August (Broome to Perth)
Leg 2: 11–17 August (Adelaide to Sydney)

Certifications

To participate in the road trip you will need a Working With Children Check (WWCC) in your home state.

WWCCs for one state are (generally) valid in others for at most 7-30 days per calendar year. The road trip will not spend any more than 7 days in any one state, but if you have other plans to work with children interstate please let us know so we can ensure the appropriate arrangements are made.

Each leg of the road trip will require multiple drivers to transport the team and equipment. The current plan is to hire a couple of cars and/or minibuses (small enough for car licences).

Please let us know if you have an appropriate licence and feel comfortable being a driver. Note that you must be 25 or older to be able to drive a hire car.

As an outreach initiative, the road trip will involve a combination of public talks, demonstrations, stalls, pub science, and so on. Although we’ll do our best to distribute the activities so you can do things that most appeal to you, it is expected that participants are generally comfortable speaking in public and doing outreach.

In the lead up to the road trip, we’ll be running professional development sessions related to the road trip that participants will be expected to attend. The purpose of these sessions will be to ensure participants feel comfortable with road trip activities, and provide an opportunity for participants to improve their outreach and presentation skills. They may include general public speaking and/or presentation skills, and/or practice presenting specific materials and/or activities.

The road trip is a substantial undertaking from a logistical perspective, and will require some input from participants in the lead up to the event. Although the organising team will do the bulk of the work, it is expected that participants assist the organising team in terms of responding to emails and requests for information in a timely manner, and potentially taking on some responsibility for developing materials and activities for the road trip.
