How would you describe your work to a 10-year-old?

Quantum computers are a new, exciting type of computer that can calculate things that are too hard for normal computers, but the quantum computers we have don’t work very well yet. My job is to find ways to use these quantum computers to solve problems anyway.

How did you get to where you are today?

I used to like science because there was a right answer for every question and I always liked solving puzzles. As I learned more, I realised that we don’t know all the answers but that finding them is just one big puzzle. I studied chemistry and physics in high school and in university because they allow us to begin to understand the world around us.

What’s the best thing about your role/work?

I get to do a little bit of everything! I use maths, physics, computer science and chemistry in my work so I get to learn a little bit about each of them. I get to talk to people who work on different parts of maths, software engineering, chemistry and biology too.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying physics/science?

Do it! Science can be challenging but it also teaches us to overcome those challenges. I strongly believe that even if you don’t want to become a scientist, knowing some science will give you the ability to seek answers and evaluate them critically, key skills for everyday life and any career path.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work/besides physics?

I love reading (especially epic fantasy novels) and playing video games (turn-based strategy). I’ve also trained in karate since I was eight and like to stay physically active.
