What do you do?
I help run QUBIC, the ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology. My role is to make sure our researchers can focus on great science by overseeing everything that keeps a national research centre running, from strategy, governance and partnerships to finance, events, communications and outreach. I also love creating opportunities for people to engage with quantum science, whether that’s through public events like the National Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip or by building connections between researchers, industry, government and the community.
How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve spent my career helping research organisations thrive. Before joining QUBIC, I worked across several research institutes and faculties at The University of Queensland in operational and leadership roles, supporting everything from biomedical research and clinical trials to large research infrastructure and national collaborations.
I’m not a quantum scientist, but I’ve always loved working alongside researchers and helping turn ambitious ideas into reality. What motivates me most is creating environments where brilliant people can do their best work and where more people have the chance to discover how exciting science can be.
What’s the best thing about your role?
No two days are ever the same. One day, I might be working on a major research partnership or planning a national conference, and the next, I’ll be helping organise an event that inspires the next generation of scientists. I especially enjoy finding creative ways to make complex science accessible and fun. Quantum science has the potential to transform our future, and it’s incredibly rewarding to help share that story with people of all ages.
The National Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip is one of my favourite outreach initiatives because it brings quantum science directly to communities that don’t often get the chance to meet the people behind the research. Seeing students realise that scientists are just ordinary people doing extraordinary work is always a highlight.
